Character: Kazuto Kirigaya/Kirito
Fandom: Sword Art Online
Character Notes:
History: Sometime before the series begins, Kirito spends time beta testing the VMMO Sword Art Online, and gets higher than anyone else does within the short period of testing. Once the game goes live, he logs in on launch day. Meeting up with a guy named Klein, he teaches Klein the basics despite wanting to go out into the field immediately and fight monsters. But panic arises when he discovers that he can't logout, and the creator of the game makes a terrifying announcement: that logout is disabled, respawn is off, and if you die you die for real. With no way to connect to the outside world, Kirito, like all the rest are trapped within SAO. He parts ways with Klein who forms his own guild Fuurinkazan and Kirito goes off as a solo player, leveling up as he goes about his way.

One month later, there is a meeting to group together and finish off the boss. 2000 people have died in the game already and more casualties are beginning to pile up as well. There is resentment between the players and the beta testers and when the boss is defeated but the leader has died in the attempt, Kirito takes it upon himself to shoulder the blame heaped on by the players. Donning his signature black jacket won from this boss battle, he becomes known as the Black Swordsman, a solo player with incredibly high skill and stats.

Months pass. Three major events follow. Kirito joins a small guild despite being higher level than they are and lies to them about his level and skill. Despite this, they accept him into the guild until a tragedy happens, and the whole guild is wiped out, the leader committing suicide after what happened to his real life friends. Kirito wanted to end himself and soloed a holiday boss on Christmas to regain a revival item that he hoped to be able to resurrect Sachi, but it could only be used 10 seconds after their death. Instead, he gives it to Klein who had held off a group of rare hunters who were after the boss and the rare item. It wasn't until Kirito read a time-delayed message sent to him by Sachi after her death that he gets the strength to go on, but he never joins another guild willingly after that.

The second is a encounter with a young 13 year old player named Silica who he rescues after her pet dragon Pima is killed defending her. They go to another floor and resurrect Pima after Kirito offers to help her out and gives her equips to deal with the floors dangers. It is only then that he apologizes for using Silica as bait since a PK guild had set their sights on her, and sends them all to jail for their crimes against another guild that they had slaughtered. He also admits that Silica reminds him of his sister, and she becomes attached to him despite their age difference.

He also meets up again with Asuna who had become a sub-commander in the guild Knights of Blood, a front-line group who has been steadily clearing the floors. When she says he should be with the rest of the frontliners, he replies it's too beautiful of a day to be spending it deep in a dungeon. The pair spend time together, despite the arguments they have as well, and reconnect from their days when they first met. Like Kirito, Asuna has earned a title of "Asuna the Flash" for her speed attacks with a rapier.

A mystery also crops up with Kirito facing a situation when Inner City Murders are being performed, but soon the real mystery behind it is solved as Kirito and Asuna discover that it was all a ruse to lure out the murderer of a guild leader over a rare item when in fact it was about a husband refusing to come to terms with how vibrant and different his real life wife had been in game, and couldn't stand changing his impression of her.

More time passes. Players are whittled down slowly, but not steadily until it reaches a sort of plateau. Kirito, needing a new sword, goes and meets up with Lizbeth, a master level blacksmith who is friends with Asuna. Kirito and Lizbeth go together to get a mineral from a dragons lair and get trapped within a huge pit. He protects Lizbeth who gains affection for Kirito for saving her, and they get the mineral. In the end, they manage to defeat the dragon and Lizbeth forges for Kirito a masterwork level sword in thanks. Around this time, about a year into the storyline a new special skill is unlocked for Kirito called Dual Wield, a skill he keeps hidden from everyone for ages.

It is around this time that Kirito spends time with Asuna more and more, and after a few incidents, the pair grow fond of one another. It is here that after a battle with Heathcliff, the leader of the Knights of Blood that Kirito is forced to join the KoB and he goes out with Asuna's old bodyguard and another member of the KoB. It turns out that her old bodyguard was a member of the PK guild Laughing Coffin, and he kills the senior member and nearly murders Kirito seconds before Asuna steps in. Kirito kills him with an unarmed skill and they are allowed to leave for an extended time. The pair marry, and buy a house in the 28th floor.

One day on the 28th floor the pair meet a little girl, assumed to be a player called Yui. Yui becomes their child and they live together in relative peace. A visit to the 1st floor reveals however that the Liberation Front has taken over and is bullying the citizens. This is where they meet Sister Azariya, who takes care of kids. She says she never met Yui before however, and before they can leave, they are approached by a sub-commander in the Liberation Front who needs their help with clearing a dungeon under the Town of Beginnings where her commander is trapped. A fight ensues against the Reaper boss that was hidden in the walls and Yui uses her GM access to delete it. However since she did that, the Cardinal system flagged her as foreign data and is planning on deleting her. At the last moment, Kirito uses Yui's leftover GM access to put her into a teardrop item that is transferred to his nerve gear.

Sometime after this, Kirito and Asuna are called back to the front lines where they join a large party and fight a boss that takes out fourteen of their people. At the end of it however, Kirito realized something isn't right with Heathcliff, and he strikes him only to see the same words flash over Heathcliff's head -- Immortal Object. The same GM powers as Yui. Its revealed that Heathcliff is actually the creator of the game, who has been playing and urging the players on, and at the 100th floor he was supposed to be the last boss. Impressed by Kirito's skill, and his deductive reasoning, Heathcliff urges Kirito to fight him, GM powers turned off and if he killed him, he would let everyone go. However Kirito was exhausted by the previous fight, and despite this he fought, only to fail after swinging into a preset attack pattern. At the last moment, Asuna broke her paralysis and leaped in front of Kirito, taking a mortal blow. She dies in his arms and Kirito, devestated, lets himself die along with her. But all of the encouragement and memories of their family urge him forward and he returns long enough to run his sword through Heathcliff. With the game cleared, Asuna and Kirito find themselves high above Aincraid and they speak to the creator of the game who tells him his reasons for building castle in the sky. The pair share a farewell kiss -- and Kirito wakes up in the real world.

Two months pass and Kirito is back to a decent bodyweight and strength, and a lot of his memorized patterns of attack and skill have translated into his real world skills. However he also discovered where Asuna is, soon after waking up and he has been visiting her every day. It's after one of these visits that he meets Nobuhiko, a member of RTC and Asuna's self-proclaimed fiance. He cruelly tells Kirito he has a week before they're married and Kirito breaks down in Suguha's arms.

Before this however, he met with one of his friends from SAO who had also escaped, who showed him a blurry picture of Asuna in a new VMMO made a year into SAO called Alfheim Online. With it's level system removed and skills set to max, it's a extreme game. Kirito decides that he needs to go into this game, and rolls himself as a Spriggan by appearances alone. However a glitch throws him into neutral territory where he finds that his SAO character data was copied over, due to the help of Yui who came along with him. Following the sound of combat shortly after, he meets a group of Salamander Dragoons who are fighting a pair of fleeing PCs, Recon and Leafa. Recon is struck down in midair combat before Kirito crashlands in the area, and he manages to rescue Leafa by defeating three of the opponents before giving the Salamander leader a chance to run, which he gladly accepts since he'd take a death penalty if he died there. Joining up with Leafa, he went to the Sylvari Town nearby and logged for the night after talking with Leafa on how he wanted to go to the World Tree. Unbeknown to Kirito, Leafa was his little sister Suguha who didn't know what she got herself into.

Kirito and Leafa leave the Sylvari Town after a disagreement with the head of her hunting party, and a word of caution from Recon, who is a friend of Leafa's from school. The majority of the first half of the trip is uneventful as they head to a neutral town between the mountains, hunting monsters to build some loot and money drops. It is then that Yui detects player signatures, and they head off to try and lose them. But in the caverns, they are cornered at the gates by a hunting party meant to kill Kirito. They nearly do, but Kirito uses an illusion spell to transform into a large monster and he wipes out all but one member of the party. Bribing the party member with a trade from all the spoils of killing the other members of the Salamander party, the lone Salamander tells them that they had been hired by the upper ranks to wipe the pair out. Leafa logs out and gets contacted by Recon in the real world, who tells them of the plot to kill the Faction Leader of the Sylvari, and Leafa decides she needs to head out and stop the war band from taking out both Sylvari and Cait Sith leaders.

Arriving there, Kirito attempts to finish the grand quest on his own, but is cut down by the overwhelming amount of npc enemies. His remain light however is rescued by Leafa who resurrects him, and he tries to go at it again, only to have her ask him who is so important that he needs to get up above the clouds. Telling her about Asuna, Leafa is shocked and realizes that Kirito is her brother. The pair logout and have a short chat where Leafa tells him that she loves him, and she relogs in, only to meet with Recon. Kirito waits for her in the area however and they duel, only to be unable to finish each other off because of dumb reasons. So the three of them assault the tower, only to have a
contingent of Sylph and Cait Sith raid groups pile into the room to give him cover. Kirito makes it through the army of npcs and he and Yui use the Sys-Admin card that Asuna threw down to them to teleport in.

Once inside, Kirito faces off against Oberon and almost falls a few times, but Oberon had no idea that the remnant of the creator of SAO was there. Cursing him for being so self important, Oberon wasn't aware that Kirito had the Heathcliff data. He sets the pain setting to 0 and finishes off Oberon with the Excalibur sword, but not before being able to obtain The Seed, which was revealed later to be the core program for the VMMO technology. With Asuna logged out, Kirito rushed to her side, only to be stopped temporarily by Sugou who had chased him there, and tried to kill him. Kirito terrified him into surrendering and later he was arrested. Kirito and Asuna had a teary reunion and they started going out in both worlds.

A month later, the SAO wrap party is being held at Agil's place, and while Suguha feels out of place, he convinces her to continue playing with him and they decide together to finish off the SAO castle that materializes into being. Even with RCT Progress dissolved, the Seed is downloaded constantly, and more VRMMOs are being built day by day in an interlinking process. It seems like Kirito and Asuna will have more things to do in this other world they call home.

There is also two more arcs, Gun Gale Online and another Post-Gun Gale story which has not been finished or animated yet, and it is unknown if the anime will be renewed for another season to tell this story. For now, it should be assumed that the Light Novel and Anime worlds are pretty much the same.

Personality: Kirito is a young man who takes a lot of duress upon himself. He feels responsible for the way that people react around him, and has been slightly alone for most of his life even with being raised by a loving family. He eventually learns to accept other people, despite his need to be alone through most of SAO's early days, but he connects with people on a regular basis to find out that he's making bonds.

He cares deeply for his friends and family made both in SAO and in ALO, and the family that constantly waited for him when he was in his SAO-induced coma. It was here that he reconnected with Suguha after his awakening, and he began to rebuild the relationship he once lost. Kirito is all about rebuilding bonds, even if he's afraid of his own power at the same time.

In battle, he loses all thought at times, turning into a wild berserker once in a while. His lust for battle is only tempered by the fact that he doesn't want to see anyone else die in SAO, and he cares for his friends dearly. He is headstrong at times, but thoughtful and delights in the simple things such as the taste of food, and on bright sunny days he'll literally get lazy and sleep, even if people around him think it's weird.

He has come to view both worlds as real, with no separation other than his avatar name and his real name. To him, people are the same in both worlds, and it really doesn't change who they are. Even if they are friends, family or rivals, he treats them with the response that he believes is correct. He loves Asuna deeply, and cares for his 'daughter' Yui, and will go all the way to defeat anyone who gets in between their relationship.

Other: Kirito for the first half of his canon is trapped in the Virtual MMO called Sword Art Online, a virtual MMO that prevents the players from logging out, and respawn is disabled. For the duration of his SAO stay, Kirito should be able to worldhop via conventional means but keep his SAO appearance, inventory and fighting skills. People coming into his world are subject to the worlds' rules which is basically levels. People will be assigned levels, which grants them limited invulnerability against lower leveled things such as enemy players and mobs, but outsiders to SAO will not be subject to the "respawn off" rule of the world. Of course, this doesn't mean that they will die instantly, but potential harm shouldn't be discounted since the pain is very much real.

SAO also has a sister game, Alfheim Online which is a flight-engine designed game. People can, if they choose, change their avatar to one of the races of ALO, to better fit into the world as a way of blending in. Mind you, ALO also has no levels, PKing happens, respawning happens and it's damn annoying if you die because you're sent right back to your hometown, or in the outsiders case, potentially ejected instantly from the game world and into the SAO/ALO Human World.

Depending on their avatar in either world, people will be either learning Sword Arts or Magic depending on their avatar. People coming into the world unchanged, (and this is an option for anyone visiting Kirito) will have no player marker, and will be classified as an Immortal Object. However any violence performed in the field will most likely flag them as foreign data by the Cardinal System and forcibly ejected from the world for a cooldown of 15 real time minutes, like a Dungeon Queue so to speak.

This also gives them the option to learn Sword Skills and Magic, but it's only applicable in both of the game worlds, to cut down on the amount of abilities that one can learn in-game and to keep the flow of DDD unchanged when it comes to learning new abilities, and not simply passing technology along like worldhops. As such, Sword Skills and Magic are basically restricted to ALO and SAO with the exception of the actual canon characters. Such as Kirito learning ALO magic, and Suguha learning Dual Wield for example.

One last difference between SAO and ALO is how towns are treated. Towns in SAO are sanctuaries and no violence can be performed to a lethal level, only blunt force with no dipping of HP. It also prevents situations such as PKing and ganking lowbies, and provides a safe environment for younger players to quest from.

ALO however has the same overall environment, but due to it's perma-PVP state, if you're an opposing race to the town, people can attack you in it but not vice versa. It's like wandering into Orgrimmar as an Alliance, but unable to defend yourself until attacked. There exists neutral towns as well, but the guards will beat you silly if you attack someone inside the gates.

Note that Kirito's wiki entry also details Gun Gale Online and the follow up, which will be followed at a later date, with or without an Anime Adaptation.

First Person (entry type):

Red Nosed Reindeer:
I don't know what to do. Tell me what I should do community! I... I.... [Kirito clutched his head and ducked it under his arms.] Why? Why did she have to die? Why didn't I tell everyone about the potential of traps? Why... what was her last words?

[Kirito trembled and struck the table.] Why was I unable to worldhop? Why did I see her die? Why couldn't I save her?

The Black Swordsman:
Can't talk too much without drawing suspicion, community. People are beginning to spread rumors about me, that I speak into the air, and send mail to people. They're saying that I have a link to the outside, and I go days without being sighted even inside dungeons.

But I can't leave and visit people today, not without knowing everyone is safe, stop talking to all of you. I saved another kid today, a cute one named Silica. We're going to find the Flower of Pneuma and resurrect her dragon. I wish I could let her meet you all, and worldhop her avatar out of here. Then she'd be safe from the PKers after her.

[Kirito tosses up a item in his hands.] But leave the PKers to me, I'll send them to jail like I promised.

Third Person:

Combat:
Kirito faced down the opponents, gauging their strength. Lizardmen, nothing worth challenging normally but they were on the fiftieth floor, something that he was overleveled for. But even a lv 78 was in danger because the lizardmen had paralysis poison on their blade. Gripping his sword, he stared him down before charging into the aggro radius.

Kirito excelled in this kind of rush, ducking under the first blow and scoring a long hit across the chest, and twisting to avoid a couple of daggers slid from the opponents' other hand. He danced, parrying along the blade and slashed at the arm. He let out a ferocious roar and continued to slice into the lizardman, several more times. 'Faster, faster! I need to beat this thing!' And with a final yell, he finished it off. The EXP board popped up, along with his winnings and he exhaled loudly.

"It's getting tougher, even for a solo player overleveled nowadays," mused Kirito, looking into the artificial sky of the dungeon. "Maybe I'm reaching my limit..."

In Town:
Kirito made it a point to play with some of the kids who had managed to get to this point. Some of them, like Silica still ranged in level around 40-50, but they put a decent challenge up when they were roughhousing. He smiled at the memory of Silica as he decided that since her birthday was coming up, he would get something for her.

Going up to the nearest store, he ordered flowers from the NPC vendor and held them up to the sunlight. "Kasumisou. I think this'll do nicely."

He smiled to himself, and laughed at the thought of visiting one of his friends. Briefly he wondered if Liz and Asuna would come to visit as well. Maybe Agil as well, if he could haul him out of the shop.
